Guests fill the Schuster Center for the Dayton Pride Dinner
Dinner and expo begin June events in Dayton
by Randy Phillips
Dayton--Pride month began on June 4 with the annual Dayton Pride dinner and expo. The evening started with a business exposition highlighting many local business sharing their services and wares.
Ryan Scarlata of Columbus returned to his hometown of Dayton to share his musical talents throughout the expo as the crowd gathered around the piano to hear his unique stylings.
Ann Wilger, a former regional director of P-FLAG, Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, was the keynote speaker. She decried the religious right and the current political regime and its opposition to the gay community. This, she said, continues to stop many people from coming out and leads to higher attempts at suicide.
On a much lighter note, Marga Gomez, known for her off-Broadway one-woman shows, kept them laughing as she entertained the crowd. The evening was rounded off with a performance by the Dayton Gay Men?s Chorus.
Pride Month continues each weekend for Daytonians. This weekend the Dayton Gay Men?s Chorus will be in concert on June 11, 8 pm at Christ Episcopal Church on West First Street in Dayton.
Courthouse Square will again host the Pride festival on June 18, with the march stepping off at noon from Cooper Park.
